A few months ago my doctor suspected that I have a gluten sensitivity.  I know, we are always at a doctor and we have a million illnesses.  I think there must be something in our water that's trying to kill us. Well, I came home that day fully motivated to become 100% gluten free and to eat only healthy foods.  I had wanted to do that for a while.  I had read tons of articles showing benefits of gluten free for children on the autistic spectrum and our eating habits aren't exactly healthy anyway.  Well, I did it.  I went gluten free.  Alone.  It wasn't fun or easy.  It was 6 weeks of eating cardboard flavored everything.  A loaf of bread that tasted like cardboard cost $7.00.  I wasn't happy.  I lost almost 10 pounds.  Looking back, it was from starvation.  I would rather eat nothing than cardboard.  I ate a lot of chocolate cereal.  It's my favorite and it's naturally gluten free.  I will puke if I see chocolate cereal ever again.  I have decided I am no longer gluten sensitive.  If I were gluten sensitive I would have found something gluten free that tasted descent by now..I haven't so therefore I must be meant to eat gluten.

Now that I am full on gluten again I am back on my journey to finding healthy recipes that taste good.  The boy kid eats too many chicken nuggets and the princess eats way too many hot dogs.  It's hard to find a recipe that's healthy and kid friendly.  It even harder to find a recipe that is healthy, kid friendly and that all 5 of us like.  We are picky people.  Almost everyone has acid reflux. I make a lot of bland food and they are all still popping Prevacid.  It's a challenge to feed these people.

I was offered the chance to review the book Clean Food Diet a few weeks ago and jumped at it.  I was very hopeful that I would find at least a couple of recipes that one or two of us would eat.

Right at the beginning of the book..drop the coke and pick up a bottle of water.  Gee thanks..I know I drink too much coke but dude it's really good!!  I'm addicted.  I give it up for a while but I always go back.  I feel better when I give it up and go to the gallon of water a day but...it tastes so good with it's brown caffeine goodness.  Yeah, I know..coke has to go.  I'm working on that.  I'm down to 1 cup a day.  Much improvement.  I'm trying to cut back on the sweet drinks with the kids.  I'm actually getting more milk into them but not more water.  Progress is slow but it's there.

On to the cooking.  Clean cooking means avoiding frying food. Yes! I can't stand frying food!  The smell alone kills me.  It also means reducing salt :( I thought I did ok.  Dinner is normally a baked meat, 2 veggies and a bread.  Not horrible right?  Well, not exactly great it turns out.  I could be doing a lot worse but I have room for much improvement.  Snacks are our biggest issue. I really have to work on making healthier snacks for the kids.

The appetizers section of the cookbook is great for snacks.  I really like the Tomato and Cheese Skewers recipe. The kids actually enjoyed it also.  I think it helped a little that they got to stab their food with a stick lol.  Another yum recipe in the appetizers section is the Crusted Jalapeno Peppers, this is not one that I would have expected to find in a clean eating book.  This book has over 50 recipes with instructions and nutritional information for each listed.  There is a recipe for Strawberry Spinach Salad.  My most picky eater is my 13 year old. She has this horrible face that she instinctively makes at anything that is not chicken strips.  She actually ate the Strawberry Spinach Salad and asked for more.  I almost cried.  Chicken strips are another item that make me want to puke, I am so sick of seeing chicken strips.

I never expected to find so many recipes in this book that we would enjoy.  It is true that you are what you eat.  You really do feel better when you eat foods that are better for you.  We haven't dumped all of our bad foods just yet but thanks to this book we have found several new healthy recipes that everyone in our family love.

If you are interested in downloading this book you may do so by clicking here.  This book is currently listed for free on Amazon.  I'm not sure how long it will be listed at this promotional price.  It is definitely a great addition to any recipe collection. Grab it up while it is FREE!
